The essential teachings of Bhaktivinoda Thakura are in these volumes in an easy-to-read format of questions and answers grouped according to topics.Requested by Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura to present this work, Sundarananda Vidyavinoda, the compiler, has drawn up questions and then allowed Bhaktivinoda Thakura to answer by quoting from the Thakura's novels, autobiography and other writings.Sundarananda Vidyavinoda's research is extensive and the society of Vaishnavas should be grateful for the amount of work he has put into pulling these teachings together.Answers to questions are short and succinct, which is refreshing and allows quick movement from one point to another. For the most part, this format is quite sufficient and proves to be a substantial reference book. This is not an introductory text. The reader should have an understanding of common Sanskrit terms, which are not explained. The book also assumes a basic knowledge of Vaishnava theology. The lack of expanded explanations requires the reader to understand some quotations within the larger context of Vaishnava teachings, as full meanings are only hinted at in some of the answers. This work is a veritable encyclopedia of knowledge, if not a catechism for Vaishnavas, revealing both general information about spiritual life and intimate details of Gaudiya siddhanta.
